Microsoft announced on 5 September 2025 that Microsoft Project Online will be retired on 30 September 2026, confirming that Microsoft’s solutions based on ageing technologies, such as Project Online and Project Server, will be the first products to be retired, with Project Online now being the first to be retired.
What services will continue?
- The application installed on Microsoft Project Desktop will continue as normal. Microsoft has not announced its withdrawal, and there are no changes to its support or availability at this time.
- Project Server Subscription Edition – will remain a Microsoft-supported solution until at least 2031.
- Project for the web → Planner Premium – Project for the web continues under the name Planner Premium, offering a centralised modern Microsoft PPM solution.
- Planner Basic – team-based project management.
- Power Platform (Power BI, Power Automate, Dataverse).
What happens to the Project Online data?
Project Online data must be migrated by the customer before 30.9.2026. Microsoft may provide migration paths and tools to migrate Project Online data to new services. This should include project schedules, resource data and other metadata. Microsoft has not yet announced a more precise timetable or technical solutions for this.
Microsoft has also announced that it is exploring Data Retention solutions for customers who have legal requirements to retain data for a number of years. If Microsoft finds suitable solutions, they should ensure that customers with specific data compliance needs can continue to meet their obligations after Project Online is gone.
Proha can help customers assess how different data storage solutions fit into their environment and, if necessary, implement customised options for long-term data storage and reporting.
Proha has strong references and practical experience in migrating data between Microsoft and other project management solutions. We help our clients to migrate their data in a controlled way to the solution of their choice – whether it is a Microsoft service (Project Server Subscription Edition, Planner Premium) or an alternative solution (Camako PPM, Safran Project). Migration can also be used to improve data quality and develop reporting capabilities.
